How do I detect when an email is phishing or if it is truely an email from
microsoft.com? I keep getting an email that wants me to "click here to
download the latest version of Internet Explorer 7" It shows the email as
coming from my own email address!!??

MS never send emails unless you have subscribed to them.....

So how do I block it? It wants to block my email address when I do
that!

Creating a rule that deletes based on a common phrase in the subject is one
way. Ignoring it and pressing Delete is another way to deal with it.

Do you often send e-mails from yourself to yourself? Create a rule that
looks for your e-mail address in the From header. Do whatever you want
with those e-mails (delete, permanently delete, move to Junk, mark as
read, whatever you want).

Personally I never send myself e-mails unless they are test e-mails that
include a passcode in the Subject header. One rule looks for that
passcode in the Subject and whitelists those e-mails. Following is
another rule that permanently deletes any e-mails sent From my own
e-mail address.

Microsoft does not send out emails with download links. It may send out
messages with links to Microsoft pages (always on microsoft.com), but no
direct download links.

Only download software from the original vendors' websites, never from
dubious email messages!
