PHOTOS DO NOT SHOW UP IN WORD OR PUB, BUT DO PRINT? WHY?

I could paste a picture in WORD or Publisher and it will print. But it does
not show up on my monitor. If I take an older file with picutres, they show
up with no problem. What can I do to restore this feature, so that it works
like it use to.

I have Window XP Pro with Office 2003 installed on a Pentium 4 machine.
