Photos don't show

This is a problem with FrontPage 2003

About 75% of the time: when I insert a photo into a page, the photo itself
doesn't show up on the page, within FrontPage. What I get is a place-holder
for the photo, with the little red X in the upper corner - and no picture.
When I publish the site, the photos appear just fine.

Sometimes I can close FrontPage and then reopen it, and photos will appear
on the pages for a while - and it seems that while I stay on those pages,
everything is okay; but once I open a different page, the images vanish
again.

It actually SEEMS like FrontPage is gobbling up memory and not releasing
it... In most cases, FrontPage is the only program running while I'm using
it. (I have enough memory to work on 200 mb images in Photoshop CS, so it
seems like I should have enough...)

This problem does not exist in other programs when I try to insert a group
of images. These images are typically only 30-40 kb. I have already
uninstalled and reinstalled FrontPage 2003, with no success.

This may seem minor, but the problem makes it difficult to set up any page
with images - I have to publish after a few changes, just to see how things
look. It's getting very irritating...

Any ideas?

Are you first importing your images into your web before inserting and
saving on a page?

Yes... I have an entire directory system set up in the website, including
"image" folders for the photos.

I should note that I've been using FrontPage since version 1, and have never
had this problem.

Most recently, it's started to do something new. If I try to replace an
existing image with a new one, in a size-specific location, it is now
resizing the new image to 32 pixels square - the size of the red X.
FrontPage is not retaining the size information - even though the new image
is exactly that size.

It seems to me that this started with an FP update from MS...

Any ideas?
