How does one change the spacing between a picture and its border in
Publisher 2003?

Thanks,

Jo Ann:
Thanks, but I'm a novice and I'm doing this second hand for
another novice. The layout tab doesn't seem to help. the border
actually covers part of the picture regardless of whether Top Left -
Center - Top Right is selected. Using Centre actuallly drops the
picture to the bottom of the page. Can you give us step by step
directions to move the border a certain distance from the picture?

Thanks,
Ed.

Exactly! The object is to set the clearance around the picture. I'll
have to get back to you on the size of the file. As I understand it,
the layout guides are set to import a picture (I think it's a .tif of an
artist's painting) which is sized to fit (with the border) on one half
of an 8.5 X 11 page (5.5 X 8.5). Guides are set Left .4" Right 1.9"
Top 4.5" and Bottom 6.37". I hope this makes sense and helps clarify
the problem.

Here are the steps in Publisher 2002:
Format - Picture - Layout -
then look down for the section
Distance from Text - Automatic is probably clicked - unclick it -
increase the values of the numbers in each box.

Thanks Erica, but it's the distance between the picture and the border
around the picture that we want to be able to control, not the distance
between the picture and text (if I understood you correctly).

By the way, the top setting for the guide listed in my previous message
should read .45" (not 4.5").

Yes, I did give directions for distance between pic and text.

Not sure I understand what you want. You want a bigger border? You want
a frame around the picture?

Select your picture
On the Picture toolbar, select the Crop tool
Hold Ctrl and drag a corner crop handle outwards from your image.

Edit the wrap points, select the image, click the dog icon, edit wrap points, this
will allow you to make the border of the image in any shape and size.

Thanks Ed: This enabled the border to be pulled out from the picture
but there's no precision provided to ensure that the space is the same
on all sides and could be identically repeated for other pictures- it's
all just guess work.
Pub 2000 provided an easy & precise way of doing this - Format >
Picture Frame Properties > Margins could be set away from the picture
precisely on all sides. Where is this similar option available in Pub
2003?

Thanks Mary - but . . . "dog icon" ? "wrap points" ? Sorry, just a
novice.

O.K. I found this in "Arrange" menu - but this just pulls the frame at a
particular wrap point. Kind of neat, but not what we're looking for.
We want to be able to control the distance a 4 sided straight border is
from the edge of the picture.

Thanks,
Ed

Create an autoshape, right-click, format autoshape, put the exact measurement you
want for the shape, click no line. Center your image in the shape, group.

We've finally figured out the way to do this. Thank you all for your
help - special thanks to Ed who pointed us to the crop tool. The
procedure we're using, that seems to work and provide a way for precise
control of the distance between a picture and its border, is to set up
the layout guides and insert the picture. Click on the crop tool.
Format > Picture > Picture Tab and set distance with a negative number
(eg. -1). This shrinks the picture to inside the guides (it doesn't
crop). Then the Lines & Border tool to apply the lines around the picture.

Thanks again for all the help. It's obvious that there are many ways to
"skin the cat"
