picture insertion

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Recently (last week) upgraded my systems (both to Leopard and to 2008). Today, went to insert a picture into a document and I am getting the message that the application cannot open the file. That this is an unsupported graphic format. This is happening with every jpg on my hard drive. Help - I need to get a report out.

It sounds like you have not updated the Office software. In any of the
Office apps use Help> Check for Updates. Depending on how recently the DVD
was produced you may have to apply SP1 (12.1.0) followed by SP2 (12.2.0) &
then the most recent 12.2.4 update, so just let it do its thing until there
are no more to be applied.

Run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions & restart after updating.

I am having the same problem when trying to insert a graphic in place of a bullet in a "bulleted list". When I attempt to use a .jpg or .gif I get a dialog that reads "This application cannot open this file. This file is an unsupported graphic format or may be damaged. Try opening the graphic in another application."

I have repaired disk permissions and the file I am attempting to use opens just fine in other programs. Updater tells me there are no available updates for my Microsoft software. I assume that means that my copy of Office is "up to date".

I am working with Mac 0S 10.6.2 and Office 12.2.4.

Have you also followed the other suggestions? What is your update level of
OS X? I believe 10.5.8 is the most current for Leopard.

If you continue to have the problem after confirming the OS update level,
repairing permissions & restarting you'll need to provide a step-by-step
account of exactly how you're going about inserting the images. Any details
may be helpful. The source of the image files could also be a factor so
include whatever you can on that. Can you insert the same images into other
types of documents, such as Excel files, PPT presentations or those created
by non-Microsoft apps?

Is this happening with all files including new blank documents or with one
specific document?

I'm running 12.2.4 here & have no problem on any systems inserting JPEGs,
TIFFs, or any other image files including WMF, so it doesn't appear to be a
Word-specific issue. The more info you can supply the easier it will be to
isolate the cause.

Although it could very well be a related issue that doesn't mean it's "the
same" :) Symptoms can be identical yet have totally disparate causes.

It would be best if you'd post a NEW message so the responses &
conversations with you & the other poster don't get tangled up in one
another's underwear... For one example, you're running a completely
different version of OS X.

Be sure to include a complete description of exactly what steps you are
taking. Using a picture as a bullet employs separate mechanisms behind the
scenes, which is another reason why your situation may well stem from a
different cause.

Also, try launching Word while holding the Shift key & see if the response
is any different. Does this occur in one specific document or does it happen
even in a newly created blank document?

Check where those JPGs came from. The file needs to be an RGB JPG in 24-bit
colour, not JPEG2000 or any of the other newer formats.

Also: It's possible that during the upgrade, your system preserved some old
preferences it should have replaced. To cure it, carry out the following
procedure:

1) Find and drag the file Normal.dotm to your desktop. Unless you have
moved it, it should be in
/Users/ ~ /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/

2) If the following files exist, Remove or rename them:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (11)

3) User/Library/Preferences/com.Microsoft.Word.plist

4) User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 (the whole folder!)

5) Then Repair Permissions with Disk Utility.

That should fix it.

Cheers

One fundamental that I simply looked right past... Do these happen to be
photos taken by a digital camera which have simply been uploaded to your Mac
but have not as yet been processed in any way? If so that could be the
cause. There are 'variations' within the JPEG format & many camera mfr's
have their own flavor which doesn't fully comply with the norm even though
it is technically a JPEG/JPG.

Try opening one of the images in a graphics program (using File>Export in
iPhoto should be sufficient) & use Save As/Export to create another copy in
JPEG format... See if you have more success.

You can also insert directly from your iPhoto Library by way of the Toolbox
palette in Word, but as yet I don't know if that's what you might be doing.

I have tried a number of different jpgs - all get the same "damaged or corrupted" message. The files that I am working with are graphs, created in excel/powerpoint and saved as jpgs for clarity and easy insertion into word documents. Interestingly, I have just tried the same maneuver on my home laptop (same upgrades, etc, same files and jpgs) and it works fine. I will try John's proposed solution when I get back into the office on Monday. One question - it appears that you are suggesting that I delete my word preferences. I assume that means that I will have to recreate all of my customized toolbars, etc (not a big deal - just a question)?

An additional response to CyberTaz - to insert the jpgs, I am going to insert > picture > from file, and, again, these are office created jpgs, albeit created prior to upgrade.

Yeah, it's looking like the problem is specific to the Mac where you're
having the problem. I've followed your procedure saving out of XL &
inserting into Word here without a hitch.

As for the del of Prefs, your toolbars & most other customizations should
not be lost -- they're saved in the Normal.dotm template. Depending on what
you may have changed in Word> Preferences you may have to reset them.

When you do as John suggests just do item #1. If that corrects the problem
you can recover may of the customizations from the old Normal.dotm using
Organizer. If it doesn't fix the problem you can just delete the newly
created Normal.dotm & put the old one back. Just make sure that Word isn't
running when you make any moves involving Prefs or Normal.

BTW, I doubt it will make any difference on the problem Mac right now, but
have you tried saving the charts as PNGs? I've found that to be the best of
the lot for sharpness & clarity.
