Pictures increase in size from PhotoEditor to Outlook

I have some pics in MS PhotoEditor that are less than 2000 KB each. If I
copy and drop in Word or PPT and then copy them into Outlook, so they display
in the body of the message rather than having to be opened as attachments,
the fie size of each increases to + 2mb each. Why? How can I put these into
my email so that they don't expand in size?

What happens if you use Insert | Picture - the same increase?
What is the format of these images?

Ah, and what is the message format - HTML or RTF?

When I do Insert / picture, it doesn't insert the pic, just an attachment.
I've tried in HTML and in RTF.
