I'm using PowerPoint 2003 on a Windows XP professional system (Dell XPS with
a RADEON X800 XT graphics card). Things display fine on my work system and
my laptop but not on this hardware. I can see the inserted pictures in the
slide sorter view but not in the normal view.

Update your video driver. Go to the ATI website and look for a driver for Win
XP for your card http://www.ati.com/. ATI updates their drivers about every
three months and what you loaded with Windows XP is long out of date.

In Response to Sonia:

with a previous computer and another problem, I did what you described --
installed a new driver from the graphics card vendor -- and it totally
trashed my display. When I called Dell Computer, they had me download the
original driver from their web site. That is the only way I could recover,
but I was never able to solve the display problem in PowerPoint 2003.

nevertheless, I will try what you suggest, but establish a system restore
point just before I installed a new driver.

Thanks for your suggestions

I have the same problem. I can't find any updated driver on the ATI site.
Is there any other explanation for source of the problem.
The problem does not occur in Powerpoint 2000.

Make sure you've installed SP-1 for Office 2003. Go to Help/Check for
Updates to get it.

I have updated the driver from the Dell Computer web site, rather than ATI, because we had a previous Dell Computer that I had, use of the driver from the manufacturer of the graphics card caused my entire display to be trashed. When I called Dell Computer to complain, they told me I must use the driver from their web site not from the graphics card manufacturer. For this reason, I am reluctant to do what you recommend, and instead I used the updated Dell Computer driver. Are you sure that what you recommend now will not cause my computer display to be entirely trashed like what happened before? Thank you for your suggestion.

I did the install service pack-1 for office 2003, and I used the latest
graphics-card driver from the Dell web site. Together, these actions did not
resolve the problem. It's still remains the same. Have you found a solution?
