What happens if, after a few years, you end up having
to "clean out" your computer, reinstall windows, and when
you reinstall Word you have no idea what your PID is? Is
there any way to get find out what it is? I have the
CD's, but not what they came in! Am I stuck having to
buy the software all over again???

Hi, Dianne. There are two numbers related to Word/Office... a 20-digit
product ID number, and a 25-digit product key. When you install Office,
you will be prompted to enter the product key.

OEM copies (preinstalled by computer manufacturers) of Office often have
the product key on a Certificate of Authenticity in the paperwork that
comes with the computer. If you have an OEM copy, you can try to
contact your computer manufacturer to obtain a new product key.

Retail copies (purchased from traditional or online stores) of Office
have the product key on a yellow/orange sticker on the back of the CD
jewel case. If you have a retail copy, and you can't find the product
key, see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823570 "How to Obtain a New
Product Key for Office Program Setup".
