Pilcrow

Okay, I'll bite. What's a pilcrow (he says, expecting this to be like the old
"henway" joke)?

Tom Willett

It's velco for use on a Pillow ;-)

It's the paragraph mark:

It's amazing the arcane and probably unnecessary (g) information
you can learn on news groups. It is not too long ago that I
discovered (in this ng, I believe) what was a "pilcrow". Once I
knew what it was, I recognized it in the Insert Symbols charts
which actually use the name! I never was an aficionado of the
random key combinations of WordStar, unlike some others here
who love keyboard shortcuts, I suspect :) For my own purposes,
I have set up "Show/Hide ¶" as a toolbar button.

I love the non-printing characters. I can't work without them yet most
everyone else I know despises them. And when I work on their files and turn
them on, I can see why. No one likes to have their shortcomings plastered
inches past their nose.

who love keyboard shortcuts,

Yes, since my tech work originated being a secretary, moving my hand
to the mouse is a time waster in most cases...so I'm one of those
shortcut lovers.

And NOW I've learned one BIGGER advantage to knowing all those
shortcuts. When you move to 2007 and can't find where the heck all the
icons have moved to...you can easily use those same old shortcuts to
get rolling much faster than someone with a mouse who is hunting for a
lost command.<wink>

Wild! I was a WordStar guy -- quite a few years ago. And I was a PCWrite guy,
too. I've written two doctoral dissertaions (both successful), so have had to
work a LOT with what we call non-printing characters these days. I don't
believe I ever heard the term 'pilcrow' before, though I have certainly seen
what I have been calling a paragraph mark all along.

Actually, I may be entering (or well into) senility, so who knows what I
have, or haven't, heard. But I do still know that the PERFECT WOMAN is, among
other things, one who knows who Henny Youngman was, in this day and age.

I'm not exactly a spring chicken. I remember watching Carol Burnett when she
was on the Garry Moore Show. I used to love that show. :)

My earliest memory of Garry Moore is from radio shows in the 40s. My family
used to sit around the radio and laugh until our sides ached. We listened to
him on Jimmy Durante.

And Carol Burnett was always one of my favorites. More rib pain, especially
in combination with Tim Conway and Harvey Korman.

And spring chickens are definitely overrated.
