Mike,

Two things to keep in mind here.

1. When you change the configuration, you are forcing a different code path
in Microsoft's code. Therefore, trying to determine why you are seeing
different behavior based upon parent pathing is going to get you nowhere.

2. What you need to do is focus on identifying WHY you are seeing the error
you are seeing. What you are focusing on is why you DON'T see that error
under a different condition. Once again, that will get you nowhere.

Now, concerning the Filemon log, what do you mean when you say that it
reports a bad path?

Well, Mike, as I said, "/db/mydb.mdb" is a completely different file path.
I'm not surprised that FileMon is telling you that it's a bad path. As for
why you get the registry error, I can't say. Exceptions often cascade. That
is, one exception causes another, and so on.

exceptions is one reason I didn't think it is a permissions issue. But I've been wrong before.

Yeh, I can see that. I really appreciate your input. The possibility of cascading
exceptions is one reason I didn't think it is a permissions issue. But I've been wrong before.

Looks like IUSR_BROOMHILDA doesn't have permission (DOH!). I think I have it added
now(full control), but now I get this if the path is Server.MapPath("/db/challenge.mdb")

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] '(unknown)' is not a valid path. Make sure that
the path name is spelled correctly and that you are connected to the server on which the
file resides.

If I change the path to Server.MapPath("/subweb1/db/challenge.mdb") it works, but it
worked before adding IUSR_BROOMHILDA.

I know, Jim. However, the whole purpose of my original question was to see if I can match
up the path on my local machine with the one on the host. Setting the IUSR_BROOMHILDA
permissions has not advanced that goal.

Mike,

I suggest that you do two things:

1. If you're going to deal with Web servers and permissions, study up on
that.
2. If you're going to deal with writing your own server-side code, study up
on that.

You've been given all the answers you need here several times. The problem
is that your knowledge of the technology is so lacking that you don't
understand the answers. In that case, we cannot help you.

My apologies for offending you. It was certainly not intentional. I learn a lot by reading
this and the other FP newsgroups.

I agree that my knowlege of server/permissions is not at the expert level.
I've been writing my own server side code for over 10 years. I've been impressed by it. <grin>

Maybe you can give me a yes or no on one last question (actually the only question)?
Given that my local FP web is divided into subwebs so I can manage two domains with it and
given that parent paths are disabled, can the path on the local and host be made to match?

Mike,

I never said that you offended me. An expert knowledge level is not
necessary. This information is actually pretty elementary. However, it
seems that you have no knowledge of permissions and you don't understand
pathing in a Web application. In that case, it's extremely frustrating for
both parties to try and resolve an issue regarding permissions and pathing
in a newsgroup. We've given you the answers numerous times over the past
week or so, but your knowledge level is not high enough to comprehend those
answers. That's not meant as a slam. It's simply that in order for you to
get help on certain subject matters, you need to bring something to the
table yourself.

Because you didn't understand the answers we gave and you don't seem to
understand the basics of pathing and permissions, my suggestion to you was
to purchase a couple of books and read up on these issues. However, I will
try again to answer your question regarding two issues:

1. Issue of "Unable to open Registry key"

The solution here is to grant the anonymous account Read permission on the
Registry key in question. Your Regmon log clearly shows where this needs to
be done.

I believe you granted the anonymous account Full Control. That is not
necessary and not advisable.

2. Issue of path not being recognized.

You posted up to four different paths for your database. It's hard for us
to know which one is which, but the basics apply nonetheless. Your
connection string needs to point to the path where the database exists. It
really is as simple as that.

It appears as though you are using a sub-site on your local machine while
the host is hosting you at the root site. For that reason, you cannot use
the same connection string because the pathing is different.

Hi Mike,

I believe I told you some time ago to use an OLE DB Connection String, so
that you would not need to access the System Registry. You can find an
example at http://www.connectionstrings.com.

Yep, you did, and thanks for that. And in fact that did negate the need to access the
registry. That, however was a secondary issue. Resolving that did not answer whether or
not I could somehow use the same path on my local machine and on the host, with parent
path off, as I could with parent path on. The answer apparently is no.

One way to do that is let ASP decide what the connection path should be, by checking for the name of the server and changing the
path accordingly
Below is an example you can customize to your paths/conditions

Glad to hear it. The answer I kept getting was "It's a permission issue". While there was
a permission issue, resolving that did not lead to resolution of my primary issue, which
was simply "Is there a way to have the same path on local and host with parent path off?"
There is if parent path is on.

Not that it matters at this point, but issue 1 & 2 are reversed(in priotity). The paths
posted seemed pretty simple to me. I was just reporting conditions as they existed.

Not appears. That's what I stated numerous times. It's a fact. And that's the answer I was
looking for all along.
