pivot table vs. spreadsheet

I use a lot of pivot tables and occasionally when I open a regular
spreadsheet excel tries to calculate it like a pivot table which
dramatically slows my work. What causes excel to treat standard
spreadsheets like pivot tables and how do I fix this. Thank you for
your help.

Don't really know what you mean here.
I guess you are confusing the PT delay with Excel re-calculation.
Try setting Calculation to Manual
