drawing placeholder is not needed in ms word it creates problems.
because whenever you are trying to draw something that evil thing, which is
like a rectangle box is coming in the page and then you are limited to creat
your drawing only in that place.
while in office 97 or 2000 we did not have such problem.

On the Tools menu, click Options. Click the General tab. Clear
the "Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes"
option. Click OK.
