Placeholder problems in slide master

Using PowerPoint 2003, I'm trying to resize and re-position the
placeholder boxes on a new slide master. When I try to create a new
slide however, the placeholders appear in a different area than where I
put them on the master thereby throwing off my headings, bullets, etc.
The placeholders always appear centered on the new slide, about a third
of the way down from the top.

When I doublecheck the master, the placeholders appear where I
initially located them. I also created a couple of text boxes and a
picture on the master. These elements appear correctly on the new
slide. I'm only having a problem with the placeholders.

After resizing etc did you save your presentation as a Design Template (.pot)
file?

Yes, I made the changes to the slide master (repositioned the title and
subtitle placeholders, added a picture and 2 text boxes) and got it to
look exactly as I needed. I saved it to the template directory as a
..pot file. I restarted Powerpoint and the template appeared in the
library with the rest of the designs. I selected my custom template.
The text boxes and picture appeared in their proper places, but the 2
placeholders were still in the default location.

Until I figure this one out, I've used a workaround where I create my
first slide, get it to look right, create a duplicate of it, change the
title and bullets and use the duplicate slide as my second slide.

As I mentioned earlier, the text boxes and picture I added are
positioned perfectly on each successive slide. It's just the
placeholders for the title and subtitle that want to stay located in
the default location (as if I'm not choosing a custom template and am
using the default design). I'm kind of new to the program, but creating
and using the slide master seems like fairly basic stuff. I must be
missing something!

Have you applied all the updates to your 2003 PowerPoint?

I have no problem resizing , moving place holders, saving as a template, then
opening a new presentation using that template an having everything as I had
changed it.

I just updated to SP1 and also installed the additional updates. I'm
still getting the same thing. I choose the custom template I made. My
text box (which simply says "Michael Presents...") appears at the very
top of the slide. A small picture appears next to it in the upper right
corner. A copyright line appears at the very bottom. All good; those
were the 3 elements I added.

Then I get the 2 placeholder areas -- that say "Click to add
Title/Subtitle" -- still in the center like the layout of the default
template. If I start typing, the spacing is all off and I have to
reposition the stuff on each slide. I tried doing this on two different
machines with the same result. No, no, I'm doing something very wrong.
I guess I'm going to have to go find someone local who is good with PP.
This is driving me nuts and I'm usually pretty good about following the
online help directions, etc.

That was it, Steve! I had a hunch it had something to do with the title
slide. I spent Sat. afternoon reading through the PowerPoint books at
Barnes and Noble. Then I came back to find your post. Your directions
really cleared it up for me.

I truly appreciate the help you and Michael provided me. I'm a little
new to PowerPoint, but I'm getting the hang of it now.

Neither... I'm a network engineer trying to put together some "how-to"
documentation. I'm going to take the PowerPoint slides and put them
through Camtasia to do some .swf and .flv video. I'm also using
Camtasia to do some screen capture video for the how-to. The swf/flv
makes a great file size for presenting from a web or intranet site.
