Hoe do I place a picture placeholder in a slide maste?

Can anyone direct me to a good web site that explains how to deal with
multiple masters in a slide presentation

You can't change the place holders in the Masters. Microsoft does not allow
it.

Is there a way to change the (or add to) the design layout

You can do anything you want with the exception of adding/changing place
holders, as long as you remember to save it as a template file (.pot) so
that you can use it over and over again. Check out the link I provided for
more information.
