Plain Text Not Shown If In Reply To Complex HTML Message?

Alex Johnson

A couple of my Wintel-using friends have long complained that when I reply
to their (HTML) mails, they cannot see my reply, or it comes as a .txt
attachment. Most people on Mac and PC got my emails just fine so I always
thought the complainers' computers must be poorly configured.

But, I have just switched to Entourage 2004, and I noticed when going
through my IMAP Sent Mail folder in Entourage that the same thing is now
happening to me. A typical example would be selling something on eBay; I
reply to the PayPal notice (received in HTML) with a brief note saying I
have shipped the item. (Note I am using PayPal as an example - I have
checked with other HTML mail.) That mail is sent using .Mac Webmail, and
takes the form of a few lines of plain text, and the original mail (which in
..Mac Webmail is not editable in a reply). But when I review that sent mail
in Entourage 2004, I see that while I have replied to the PayPal notice, the
text I have added does not seem to be there - not in an attachment or header
information. I have now checked and the text is there - it can be seen when
I view Source - but that is not very useful. I have also checked that this
happens when I send mail to myself - i.e. it is not some peculiarity of Sent
Mail and can be seen in the Inbox, Drafts, etc.

I cannot reproduce this using Entourage or Mail because the HTML is shown
in-line when replying, and all that is preserved is text colour, alignment
and so on - images etc. are all stripped out. It is only complex HTML
messages replied to within Webmail that exhibit this problem when reviewed
in Entourage 2004. However, .Mac Webmail, Apple Mail, and Entourage v.X all
do show my text reply before quoting the original HTML mail when reviewed.

Clearly I have a workaround - I do not "reply" to HTML mail in .Mac Webmail
without deleting the prior mail (possible by deleting the "attachment"). But
I wonder how much Entourage 2004 is simply reflecting behaviour of Outlook
for the PC?

Is this a known problem? Is there a fix?

Thanks for any help.

Alex

I don't know a lot about this issue but it sounds like the problem may lie
with .Mac Webmail rather than Entourage.

Hi Alex,

Can you forward a message that is exhibiting this problem?

Thanks,
Michael
