playing CD audio track in PowerPoint 97

Homer

Hello,
I'm running Windows XP Home edition and have PowerPoint 97. I'm trying to
insert CD audio tracks into a presentation but with no luck. I've followed
the help instructions carefully but it will not allow me to insert a start
time or stop time in the setup dialog box. If I just leave it default to
00:00 and 00:00, my CD drive just makes noise and hangs things up until I
eject the CD. The CD was burnen in Windows Media Player and plays just fine
on its own. Can anyone tell me what I may be doing wrong.

Thanks

You say the CD was created using Windows Media Player? What type of files are on the CD?

In that case, these are the steps you should be following:

1. Choose "Movies and Sounds" from the Insert main menu option.
2. Depending on your preference, select "Sound From Gallery", "Sound From File", "Play CD Audio Track", or Record Sound.
3. Locate the Sound file that you wish to play across any number of your slides.
4. Insert the sound.
5. If you don't want the sound icon to appear in the presentation, drag it off the slide.
6. If you are asked Do you want the sound to play automatically? Select "YES".
7. Right click the sound's icon and select "Custom Animation" from the popup menu. The Custom Animation dialog box will open and your sound file should be listed.
8. Select the "Multimedia Settings" tab, making sure that the sound object is selected.
9. Click the checkbox, placing a checkmark next to "Play using animation order".
10. Select the "Continue slide show" radio button. This allows PowerPoint to continue playing the sound when you move to the next slide in the presentation.
11. Beneath Stop Playing, Select the number of slides that you would like the music to continue to play through. For example, if your music or sound track should play across the first 5 slides before a new music or sound track should play on slide 6, enter 5 in the box.
12. Click the "More Options" button, and click a checkmark in the "Loop until stopped" checkbox.
13. Select the Timing tab. To play automatically, the timing should be set to Start After Previous with a 0 second delay.
14. Your music track will now continue after you leave the slide on which you placed it and play until it reaches the slide number which you entered to Stop Playing.
15. Go the slide where you want your next music or sound track to begin playing.
16. Repeat steps 1 - 14 for your next music or sound track.

Thank you for the detail response. I'm sorry but I can't get past step 2.
Maybe I should tell you what it is I'm trying to do. Maybe PP 97 can't do
this. I have a 126 slide presentation. I have 3 CD audio tracks that I want
to play consecutively through the end of the presentation. The total length
of the music covers all the slides nicely. I want the audio to start when I
start the presentation. I was able to add the cd icon to the first slide but
the minute I click the mouse to start the presentation, the audio stops.
I've tried to do this with the CD in the drive and I also tried copy in the
audio tracks to a file on the hard drive. I've had no luck.

Thanks

I no longer have PP97 any more, and my memory sucks. Seeing that you made the original CD you might try ripping the 3 selections into MP3 format, then insert those files into the same folder as you presentation and insert them instead of trying to use the CD selections

Hi!

I sort of followed your instructions but in my PPT 2007, the options are not
exactly as you mentioned but I was able to get the music by specifying the
number of slides to play it. However, I seem to have lost the ability to
advance the slide automatically. I now have to advance by clicking the arrow
key. I was able to do Steps 1-6. Step 7, Custom Annimation is not an option
when I right clicked. I did find it under "Animation Tab". I did not exactly
find steps 8-12 but I was able to specify the starting slide and ending
slide. I found something called trigger - and I don't know what that does.
Anyway, I was able to do steps 13 and 14. When I run the slide show, I have
to click to advance the slide. I was hoping that the clides will
automatically advance after 4 seconds. I specified this under the tab
"Animations -> Advance Slide -> Advance after 4 seconds but I think the steps
above over rode it. So, any suggestions?

Michael,
Thanks for you help on this problem. I had no luck inserting MP3 files into
the presentation. But I did a little research online and found that
PowerPoint 97 had a bug. It will not play the last track on a CD. So, I
wanted to use 3 audio tracks for my presentation. I burned another CD with
more than the 3 tracks I wanted to use. Additionally, when setting up the
play back of the CD tracks, I had to start with track 1 and end with track 4,
even though I was only using 3 tracks. It worked. I thought I would share
that with you, in case you get another question about PP 97.

Thanks again.

Hi! I did what you suggested - it played the music across the slides (which
is great) BUT I have to manually move to the next slide (that is, click the
arrow button). What I really want is for the slides to advance automatically.
I just want to leave the presentation alone and not have to stand next to the
computer the whole time. That is what I had before ... but after I added the
sounds, it won't advance automatically. Thanks for responding and hope you
have other reco.

Thanks for getting back with your work around. ISTR even though MP3 files did not show up on the list of usable files PP97 would indeed play them.

Oh.

You tagged onto a post about playing CD audio tracks in PPT 97, so I assumed
that was the trouble you were having.

In future, please begin your own thread.

To add automatic slide transitions in PPT 2007, select all the slides in the
thumbnail pane on the left, go to the Animations tab, and input a time in
the "Advance Slide" box. For 5 seconds, input 00:05. For 1 minute 5 seconds,
input 01:05.
