Please explain how linked Tables works

Hi,
I know how to link a table, but I would like to know how exactly linked table
works
assuming I am linking a table from fox pro to Microsoft access
am I correct that Microsoft access hold a "reference" to the fox pro table?

Does access uses ole-db provider for fox pro to get the data?

when I query the access data base, does access send the query to the fox pro
table?

does access translate the SQL to fox pro SQL before passing it to the fox
pro provider?

are linked table in general is a good way to 'synchronize between several
data bases (exchange,dbf,sql server)
and my own data base?

I can see that access can linked to Exchange MAPI folder, does it uses the
OLE DB Provider for Exchange?
(both access and exchange must be on the same computer)

Thanks
