please help lost ruler

Hi' all,
I have a new computer with XP home, I installed Microsoft Office and am
having trouble with "word". I can't get the vertical ruler to appear. I'm
just learning "word" so forgive my ignorance. I asked the office helper and
it said I need to go to view and tick ruler but it's already ticked and the
top ruler is there but I want the vertical one. Then the office helper said
I needed to have pagelayout, I did that but don't like the wide vacant bar
at the left and don't know what that is for. Would someone please tell me
what to do. I have a book on word but it just says if I want the ruler to go
to view and tick ruler which is no help.
I would appreciate your advice,

In the Tools/Options/View tab, under "Print and Web Layout Options",
there's a box labeled "Vertical Ruler (Print View Only)".

Don't know which "wide vacant bar on the left" you mean - does it have a
heading? What version of Word do you have?

I replied yesterday but my post didn't appear.
I have word 2000. The vacant bar at the left which was about 3 inches wide
has gone now. I clicked on something, not sure what and it went. I have the
vertical ruler now but at the top with the horizontal ruler I can only move
the left side to make a margin and when I type it goes right across the
page. Can you tell me how to get the ruler to work at both ends.
