"Please install Office 2003 first" is displayed during MUI install

I have a user with a spanish localized Windows XP installation and
English-language Office 2003 pro installed on a PC.

He is an english-speaking person who is trying to learn spanish, and is
going for an immersive environment on this particular PC.

When he attempts to install the Spanish (3082) MUI pack, from the CD with
spanish on it, he sees spanish as an unavailable (but checked) option.

He hasn't installed a spanish-language version of office, just the english
one.

When I tried to have him run setup from the command line, the error he saw
was something like "Please install Office 2003 Professional first and then
install the MUI...".

He definitely has office 21003 pro installed already, and I had him try
running setup with various /f switches, too, none of which worked (same
error, I think, but I'll have to check to e sure). I am currently awaiting
the results of having him do a "repair" from add/remove programs on his
office installation, but I'm looking for any pointers or prior experience
with this that anyone might have.

I wonder how did you install English version of Off2003 on a Spanish version
of XP. If my memory is right, its not possible. Its most likely to be a MUI
pack of Operating System. Office and Operating system both have their own
versions of MUI packs. Please confirm this for me. I will let you know about
other options after that.

Hi Ajith,

Installing an English Languge edition of Office on a non-English Windows version is a supported configuration,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870922/en-us?FR=1
but as you mentioned it's not clear where the Spanish MUI pack comes in if this is a retail CD.

The basic situation, as I understand it, is that with the English Office 2003
install, the office menus, dialogs, etc are still in english, and not
locaized to spanish.

The MUI comes in in an attempt to correct that situation (without having to
purchase a localized version of Office Pro, since we had already purchased
the Office MUI pack).

I just can't figure out why the MUI installer thinks Office 2003 Pro isn't
installed. Do I need to slipstream an MUI service pack into the MUI install
set first? I'm reasonably sure that the Office install on this machine has
all of the Office updates applied, but I don't know if that would make a
difference.

I don't know if the copy of Windows is an OEM spanish version or retail...if
it makes a difference, I'll ask, but I know that it's not English-language
windows with the windows MUI for spanish. It was purchased in Costa Rica by
the user in question, but I don't know if it came with the PC, or if it was
purchased seperately (an after the fact).

Hi Adrian,

The Office MUI Packs (for changing menu language) aren't supported for editions of Office 2003 other than the Microsoft Office 2003
Multilingual User Interface (MUI) pack edition with enterprise/volume license, but the Windows version being OEM or other shouldn't
impact.

You may want to review the chapter from the Office 2003 Resource Kit here that covers deploying with and adding on specific MUI
packs to see if the steps you used are those requested.
