i got a row of inputs with letters and numbers at the end of it ( e.g
RN1, RN2)

now i wan to count the number of returns from RN regardless of the
number behind. So how do i do it?

A1:A10

RN1
RN2
RN4

count_num_ of_returns

Perhaps in say, B1: =COUNTIF(A1:A10,"*RN*")

Based on your given conditions, Max's suggested formula

=COUNTIF(A1:A10,\"RN*\"

should work.
