Point "stuck" in Command

When I have used either the "Connector" or "Text" function from the toolbar,
it seems that my mouse is "stuck" in perpetual state on this command. Even
if I add a new shape, I still have the small cross and box that was
previously used when I added text to the chart. How do you "shut" the
commands off of the mouse/pointer.

Just select the ordinary Pointer Tool. That turns off the connector or text tools.
