Poor IMAP Performance with Outlook 2007

I have been using Outlook 2007 for a few months now and am very unimpressed
with it's performance when using an IMAP mailbox.

My Outlook 2007 is fairly simple: 1 POP mailbox, 1 IMAP mailbox and a few
RSS feeds.

On startup, it checks the POP/IMAP mailboxes but does not update the RSS
feeds. Initially it is fine, but typically when send/receive reaches about
90%, the whole application hangs for around 45 seconds, before coming back to
life and allowing me to use it.

Additionally, when switching from one part of the app (e.g. calendar) back
to the IMAP mailbox, if new mail has been received, the application hangs for
20 seconds or so, with the status saying "Updating cached messages..." before
again coming back to life.

I never had this problem with Outlook 2003. I am on a very fast connection
and the IMAP account is hosted on my LAN. It uses TLS for security. Using
Ethereal to monitor network traffic I have ruled out the delay being caused
by network delays, it's definitely some problem with the application.

My Office installation is fully patched and running SP1.

Any suggestions?
