Pop-up on page of Microsoft activation?

S

Susan

I have reinstalled XP-pro and Frontpage 2002, installed
IIS and FrontPage extensions. While connected with AOL, I
went into FrontPage. I got page that was supposedly?
Microsoft page asking if I wanted to register online or
call. I tried to register online but could not at that
time so I tried the call selection. I started to get pop-
ups telling me to go to this site. I don't trust sites and
closed out of them. Pop-ups would start with
"Message from Localhost to user 2/18/2004."

I don't understand what is going on. I do not have updates
for Windows or FrontPage yet installed because just
reinstalled XP pro last night.

I installed McAfee virus scan and firewall this morning.
Did someone already fine a hole?

What should I do? Please offer suggestions.
Thanks!

Susan

If you reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP and FP2002, you will have to
activate both. You can find the Windows Activation function under Start Menu
| Programs | Accessories | System Tools

I understand activation. These pop-ups could have been
done by Zuccarini! I have never experienced this before.
Don't understand the Localhost thing! Was this really
Microsoft site?

Localhost = you web server (IIS) on your computer.

Okay, Localhost is my computer(laptop). But did someone
somehow take possession or did some "crazy" just write
that in pop-up? Don't get pop-ups when not connected to
Windows Updates or trying to Activate FrontPage. Is it
somehow connected to server on laptop? PLEASE explain. Do
I need to run DontHijackThis?

Ignorant but trying to learn!

Thank you Kathleen. It was Windows Messenger Service. ISP
had program to block those pop-ups which I ran and have
had no more problems. I immediately thought of MSN but
after reading post realize it is different.

You can also disable Messenger Service on your computer in Services. You
should also have a firewall on your PC.
