See if there is a firewall or anti-virus or anti-spam software that might
be interfering with Outlook's ability to connect.

weve tried that cause it was affecting every computer in our plant. when we
installed sp2 for xp the firewall was screwing us and we fixed that. the
problem is that for some reason half the time they cant get their email
because of this error but if they log off anf log back in they can get email.
then it gives them an error message about an hour later saying tat it cant
find the pop3 server.

Do you perhaps have any routers or proxy servers that users machines
round-robin between? I've had similar problems here at Microsoft when
certain routers or proxy servers are misconfigured - when I'd be randomly
assigned to the misconfigured item, things would stop working...

yes we have one router that is a linksys router that routes the internet from
the wireless antenna that we have. we have ever had this problem till we
updated our systems to xp service pack 2. we think that there is something in
sp2 that is causeing the problems. we have restet our router but we are still
having problems. please help

Check that the Windows firewall on the machines is set to allow port 110
(or whatever port your POP3 server uses).
