Populating info (or append query?)

I am trying to add comments to a number of different letters sent by
different people. Each person sent one letter, with a code, and I need to
populate the codes to about 200 letters (four codes total). Can I populate
the codes (already entered into one form) to all letters without separately
entering them in? I can't seem to get an append query to work...
