Possible bug: Word 2007 and documents without extentions

N

NZP

Some older files on our network do not have a file name extension. Office
2007 is able to open documents without file name extensions but is unable to
save edits. The bug is that Word appears to save the document. Word does
not give any feedback to the user that his changes are not saved. We have
had a number of users who have lost their changes in this way.

To overcome this issue you can either rename the document before opening it
to include an appropriate file extension or use the ‘save as’ option once the
document is opened. You will need to delete the old document that does not
have a file extension if you are using the ‘save as’ method.

This issue would be resoved if Word let let user know that they need to use
the save as option to keep their changes.

Hi NZP,

I wasn't able to duplicate this in Windows XP.

Is this the release version of Word 2007 and are you saving to a local drive or to a network drive?

What file format is the file that is being opened (classic .doc, or ???)

What is the default file save type you see when using File=>Save As?

How are the documents being opened (File/Button=>Open or double clicking in Windows Explorer, etc).

The default in Windows is to not *show* file extensions. Are these files that have an extension but do not show (the default save
in Word) or that are actually saved without an extension (in which case put the file/document name in quotes when saving to override
the default behavior, would be one method).

Hi Bob

Most of our users are running thin clients and access the network via RDP to
Server 2003 Standard boxes. The files being accessed are in a shared folder
on a file server. We are using the released volume license version of Office
2007. I have reproduced this issue on on Windows XP and Vista.

The document opens in compatibility mode and when doing a save as the
default save as type is Word 97-2003 Document. When testing this issue I
open the document from the "Open" option in the Office system menu. As there
is no extension if I double click on the file in exporer I get the Open With
dialogue.

I cannot reproduce the issue with a new file. It seems that it only occurs
with older files. The one I have been testing was created 1997.

Regards

David
