Possible ON2007 B2TR Bug

A

Amos Soma

I noticed that since I updated to B2TR anytime I attempt to paste anything
into my notebook, ON freezes and then shuts down. It doesn't matter what I
attempt to paste. It could be a hyperlink or some text from another
application.

Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks - Amos.

Not that specific issue, but please log the bug on Connect.

Also, if it is an application crash, the automated crash reporting tool
should appear. Do indeed let that tool report back to Microsft. that's
actually the best way for the developers to resolve the issue in a future
release.

Since I installed B2TR mine crashes every time that I paste something when
the notebook can't synch. I'm using a USB flash drive for synching between
two computers. I didn't notice this in the initial Beta 2. I can paste as
long as the USB drive is plugged in. I've let the auto errror reporting send
bug reports a few times.

I didn't log a new report on the connect site, but commented on # 213672
that someone else just logged today. It mentions Vista, but mine acts
exactly the same on XP.

You might want to try and rebuild your cache.
Start, Run, "onenote /safeboot" should give you a dialog where you can
click to build a new cache. Please make sure that your USB drive is
plugged in and that before closing ON you made sure to sync all your
notebooks.

Robert,

This is my experience as well. I have a 2G USB drive I synch to. I didn't
think to try the paste operation when the USB drive is vs. isn't installed.
When it is not installed, ON crashes. When it is installed it does not
crash.

I'm having the same problem - OneNote is crashing whenever I paste. I also
have a one note file that's on a flash drive. Unfortunately, my flash drive
isn't around as I use it as offsite backup and just sync it up once a day or
so.

Is there a way of turning my cache file into the main onenote notebook,
reopening it and being able to paste?

Is it crashing for a particular section? Or just all of them?

No

I'm having the same issue. Using a flash drive for OneNote storage and
working offline. I've tried to paste into several folders and they all fail
and OneNote restarts. With the flash drive installed I can paste information
with no trouble.

Rudy Moore

Cleared the cache. Nice "are you sure" dialog, by the way. (joke)

No luck. Pasting to files on a flash drive, when the flash drive isn't
present still doesn't work. I'm guessing that it's trying to access the
missing flash and not handling the error correctly in this particular case...

Can't wait for the next "Technical Refresh." Silly name... which wanna-be
marketting guy thought that one up?

What are you trying to paste?
I just made a notebook here on a USB stick, removed the stick and pasted
some text from FireFox into the ON notebook. No crash.
Can you give me an exact scenario (step by step) in which you encounter
this problem, preferably starting with a fresh, new notebook?

Here is exactly what I've done:

1) I started with /safeboot and clearred the cache. I also tried deleting
the cache file, OneNoteOfflineCache.onecache

2) Start OneNote - B2TR. It says (Beta) (12.0.4407.1003) MSO (12.0.4407.1005)

3) Plug in my USB flash drive

4) Create a new shared notebook, Test. Click "I will use it on multiple
computers". Location is the flash drive.

5) OneNote creates the folder on the flash drive and everything looks good
in OneNote.

6) In "New Section 1" default page, type a couple of lines of junk text.

7) Either:
a. Unplug the drive OR
b. Shutdown OneNote and stop the USB device.

8) If I shut down OneNote, bring it up. Type some more junk text on the
page. It's not synchronizing - it's red. This works fine. I can later
synchronize this with no problem.

9) Copy and paste a small amount of text from Notepad or IE or even from the
same page in OneNote. Use either ctrl-V or right click paste.

10) OneNote sits there for a moment, then shuts down wanting to send an
error report.

Patrick,

This was definitely working for me before the beta 2 refresh. I was using
the USB method because webDav over https had issues and your post on Chris
Prately's blog mentioned this USB method. It was working great. Now it
doesn't.

I tried the same test with a network file share. Same exact steps, but
stopped the network share. It works great. It doesn't crash.

Unfortunately, the file share method really doesn't work out for me . I was
using it between work and home computers and needed some method (not vpn) to
synch these. It really was working well.

Thanks,

Robert

Have you run chkdsk on this USB stick before? If not, you should.
Your step 7.a) is a really bad idea. You should always use 7.b.
Why is 7.a bad? OneNote writes to a local drive every 3 seconds. The
chance that you pull out the USB stick while OneNote is writing is
extremely high. If you do that, you might end up with the file system
corrupted on the drive which could cause you all kinds of weird
problems. Hence, run chkdsk.

I repro it now. Do you have a tablet PC?
Great steps! Thank you!

The good news is that the bug is fixed in later builds. The first bad
news is that there prob. won't be another public beta build, which means
the fix will be in the released version. The second bad news is that
there doesn't seem to be a workaround.

You might have to just have the USB stick plugged in all the time,
sorry.

Thanks for looking into this. I saw this on two computers and the others
posting sounded like they had the same issue. I don't have a Tablet right
now. I'm using two laptops with ON. Congratulations on the MVP!
