Post update Office unavailibility

New poster with an issue that may be in the wrong forum and if so, I
apologize in advance.
My dilemma is as follows: Immediately after downloading the "Compatibility
Pack for the 2007 Office System" I lost access to both Office 2007 and Office
2003. Now whenever I try opening any application in the Office suites I get
the following prompt "This update package could not be opened, Verify the
package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application
vendor."

I've tried to uninstall/hide the aforementioned update but that update isn't
being recognized as I get a prompt telling me the patch package couldn't be
opened and to verify the package exists.

I tried uninstalling both Office suites in order to reinstall either of them
from scratch but that isn't being allowed as there seems to be a
"corruption". Additionally, I can't install over the previous installations
as "installation errors" prevent that. I would stress that these are
legitimate programs being run on 2 computers and that there were never any
issues until the last update. If it's relevant my OS is Vista for a tablet PC.
Every other function on my tablet is fine.

Does anyone have any ideas before I introduce my computer to an oversized
hammer?
