Postcard mail merge

I created a postcard in Publisher and it is setup to print 4 cards per 8 1/2 x 11 page. I want to merge numbers to identify each postcard and I've attempted both, a mail merge and a catalog merge. The numbers appear in the text box, but Publisher creates a separate page for each number. So, when I go to "print preview", I have four postcards on one page, but they are all the same number. I want to have 4 postcards on one page, but numbered consecutively.

Using mail merge, a simple way to do this is to create four different
columns of numbers. Assuming you are using a spreadsheet such as Excel.
Field 1 would be for the first column and postcard, Field 2 for the second,
etc... The same procedure would apply if the data is from a different
source. The main thing to remember is that if you are printing 4up, then you
need four fields - a different one for each postcard.

But print preview doesn't show each record. It will show the same record on
each page. Do a print TEST or print a couple pages to see that the records
are actually getting printed. This is a limitation of the print preview in
current versions of Publisher.
