Postscript Fonts in Word 2008

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

I have tried a number of things to get a few Postscript fonts to show up correctly in Word 2008 and cannot make it work reliably.
I have:

1. Trashed Office 2008 and system font caches
2. Checked them with Font Doctor
3. Tried them in both Tiger and Leopard (works better in Leopard)
4. Made a new suitcase with TransType (only Lite and Medium show up, not Black)
5. Trashed other MS prefs
6. Called Microsoft - support refused to discuss the issue because they feel this is "3rd party software" which they do not support
7. Tried changing "compatibility" options in Office 2008

I even bought TrueType versions of the font, which work fine for Office 2008, but create issues for all our documents created in Illustrator and InDesign. It should be noted that these fonts work fine in all the other adobe and Apple applications on 24 other machines, and the symptoms appear on all 6 machines I have installed Office 2008 onto (a mix of PPC and Intel)

Any suggestions?

There is a glitch with how fonts show in Word 2008. First and most
important question. Go to Format | Font dialog. Do the missing fonts
show in the teeny scrollbox there?

If they show, then Word is reading the fonts fine, but there is a
problem with the other font menus.

If they don't show, then Word can't see the fonts at all, and it's a
totally different problem.

Second important question--exactly what version of Word? have you
installed the 12.0.1 update (or the 12.1 update, just released today,
I'd let it shake out a bit before going there).

5 of the 6 fonts show up in the format/font menu in Leopard, and 4 of the 6 show on Tiger. This has happened in both 12.01 and today in 12.1

Something similar happens in PowerPoint: All 6 of the fonts show up in the Format/Font menu in both Tiger and Leopard, but in Tiger 4 of the 6 show in the Formatting Palette, and 5 of 6 show in the FP in Leopard.

Hmm. I don't know, especially since I think the 12.1 update was supposed
to fix some identified font issues. Can you post the font names? I'll
holler for help from the more font-knowledgeable.

The main one we are concerned about is "Geometric 415 BT", and I have noticed similar behavior with the "Univers" family.

Thanks!

Hi DDWTech,
I am able to reproduce this issue in-house. The partial workaround at this point, as you've discovered, is to go to the Format>Font dialog. This will permit access to most of the fonts. I noticed that the font names show up in the menu, but as "Lite" or other such nonsense.

Does pasting the some text from TextEdit that uses the missing fonts cause them to show up in the menu or dialog?

Thanks,

Scenario One:

Geometric 415 BT PS folder in User>Library>Fonts folder, deleting "Word Font Cache" and "Word Font Substitues" files after removing and placing font files.

TextEdit – Show Fonts has all six styles: Family >Geometric 415 >Medium; Lite; Medium Italic; Lite Italic; Black; and Black Italic. Behaves as expected.

Word 2008 – Font menu> shows Geometric 415 Lite; Lite Italic; Medium. Format >Font menu shows: Geometr415 Lt BT; Geometr415 LtIt BT; Geometr415 Md BT. Formatting Palette >Fonts shows Geometric 415 >Lite; Lite Italic; Medium but will not change to any of those choices (broken).

Font menu also only shows the same three styles and also is broken. If you want Microsoft to find out about this, use Help>Send Feedback to send
your report to Microsoft.

I suspect there's little point in telling "us" about it, we can't do
anything about it :)

Cheers
