PowerPoint 2001 quits on startup

I've been using all the Office 2001 programs successfully for years on
my G4, running it on Classic since I upgraded to OS 10.3.9 last year.
Now, suddenly, PowerPoint won't run. It quits immediately on startup
although Word and Excel still run just fine. I tried reinstalling the
whole Office 2001 Suite but the problem persists.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I had a similar problem with Word 2008. When I read the error log, it
kept listing "Japanese Proofing Tools". I deleted that file and the
problem was cured. Perhaps it will work with PPT.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the response.

Late last night I saw a posting (here, I think but I can't recall)
that said that w/re to PPT 2004 the PPT toolbars become easily
corrupted and that deleting their prefs would be helpful.

I have PPT 2001 but I can tell you that I deleted ALL the PPT prefs
and it worked. I guess Office programs don't work well when you
customize toolbars. I have a habit of customizing the toolbars in
whatever app I'm, esp Office. Word sometimes used to quit on me too.

Interesting.

In the Windows versions, PPT kept its customizations in a PCB file. It
apparently never cleaned up after itself and deleted old stuff because the
file had a tendency to grow and grow over time. The bigger it got, the
slower PPT started up in PPT 97. PPT 2000, though, would simply start up
then crash if the PCB file was too big.

I wonder if this is a similar problem.

Folks might want to keep an eye on the size of the prefs files; if they grow
and grow, you might have laid a finger directly atop the problem.

FWIW, it's always been recommended to me that it's better to not modify the
Built-In Office toolbars. Instead, create your own custom bar(s) to include
any buttons/commands you wish & use them instead of the built-in bars - all
of which can be turned off. Altering the built-ins seems to be more likely
to cause the corruption.

It's also a good idea to back up your Prefs periodically while all is well
so you can restore them if necessary without losing your customizations.

Thank you for the suggestions but you must understand that if someone
is running older software and not upgrading there is often a good
reason. For instance:

(1) They may not have the money for the upgrade

(2) They may have an older OS which does not support an upgrade

(3) They may have an older Mac (like a G4) with the old Motorola
processor chip, not an Intel and they
cannot update their OS without major hardware modifications or
buying a new computer

I don't mean to be snide, but in my case all of the above are true so
I must make do with what I have.

Cheers,
Franny

Hi -

I just realized that Office for Mac 2004 would run on my system
(10.3.9), but...alas! I have neither a DVD player nor the $$$ to
upgrade at present.

I really do appreciate all of the suggestions, in any case.
