powerpoint 2003 crashes with projector use

I cannot use Sony laptop with dell projector to show powerpoint
presentation-it crashes evertime-what's up??

Question: when you connect the two together can you display documents from
other programs. For example can you display a Word document or Excel
spreadsheet without difficulty? Fay

Sometimes it helps to turn both the laptop on and the projector before connecting the cable...
