I inserted an 25Mb video into my powerpoint deck, but can't seem to get it to
play during the slideshow presentation in Powerpoint 2003. A smaller 5Mb
video works fine.

Probably a little more than your system can handle. How large is the PowerPoint
presentation

It could be an array of issues. I have a similar problem but can't even post
thequestion....grrrrrrrrrr microsoft.

Anyway, you will need to provide much more information if you wish a helpful
answer. For example; do you get an error message? Will the larger files with
mplay32? Are you usine XP? If so which version? Do you have third party video
editing software installed? What is the file extension of the clip that
won't play?

Good luck.

No error message comes up. I'm running xp sp2 and the extension for the
video is .mpg.

What your saying is that it is a single slide with your 25mb video file. you
might want to try here. http://www.echosvoice.com/tshoot_video2.htm,

It was just a test with the single 25Mb file.

First thing you need to check is the 25mb video clip. Make sure that i
will play outside of Powerpoint in Media Player. Your computer may no
have the same player that the clip was created with. If your running
early version of media player the clip may not play on your system.

Secord thing to check is how much memory you have available and what i
playing in the background when you try to play to clip in Powepoint. I
you have alot of programs load when you start your computer this wil
eat up your memory and you may not be able to play the clip i
Powerpoint. Also consider the format of the clip itself. GIF require
more memory than AVI and AVI requires more memory than a MPG.

Also consider that you may not have the right player on your computer

Great call on checking to see if it will work with mplay32. Just a little
background. I'm running this on MS XP SP2. I created two .mpg files using
the same video editing software. One is 5mb and the other is 25mb. The 5mb
file runs fine from powerpoint 2003, but the 25mb file doesn't run at all.
It doesn't even register an error.

When I took your advise and ran both of these .mpg files on mplay32, only
the 5mb file ran. I thougth that if they both ran on media player 10, that
they'd run on mplay32. I guess I was wrong. The 25mb .mpg file won't run on
mplay32. Do you know if there is a file size limit for mplay32 on XP? I

No, it's not an issue of size. I suspect it's the codec used. What are the (in
detail) differences in the settings you used to record the two versions of the
video? Obviously one is highly compressed and they use different codecs.

Sonia,
Thanks for staying with me on this thread. I ran the 25mb file from my
old home computer on MS XP sp2 using powerpoint 2000 (9.0.2716) with mplay32
ver. 5.1 sp2 and it worked fine. So I'm confused as to why it won't run on
my new computer on MS XP sp2 using powerpoint 2003 (11.6361,6360 sp1) with
mplay32 ver. 5.1 sp1.
Based on what I see, I'm assuming that mplay32 is the video component
for powerpoint. Is there an sp2 available for mplay32? How do I get it?
Thanks.

Thanks for the details regarding the two systems. Actually, what I am
interested in are the settings that you used in your video editing software when
you created the two versions of the videos. Also, which system did you create
them on - - the old one or the new one? Is the video editing software installed
on the new system?

I've actually created different versions on 4 different computers including
both my current system and my home system. I'm not sure if this is what you
are looking for in the way of setting, but I created them for NTSC 29.97,
mpeg 2, vbr 2376, audio bit rate 224, export video resolution 480x576.

Are you aware of an updated version of mplay32 for MS office 2003 that I
might try?

Sonia

What software did you use to edit the file?

You say that you have Windows XP, SP2, yet the version of mplay32.exe indicates
SP1. While that is odd, I don't think it is your problem. I do think that I
would do a system file check. You can do that by going to Start > Run and
typing "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes), noting the space after sfc. You'll
need to have your Windows installation CD handy.

Are you sure that you are waiting an adequate period of time for the video to be
read in and started?

Thank you all for your help. My powerpoint problem got resolve with 2 steps.
1) loading a codec pack onto my system and 2) moving the source video into a
directory, whose pathname does not exceed some internal <pathname length>
threshold. It's working fine now. I'm a little disappointed that
PowerPoint's mplay32 has such silly limitations.
