PowerPoint 2003 Slide background problem

I can't delete the background on a single slide in a new slide presentation.
I used Format - Backgound -- checked the omot box -- checked apply -- but
its still there. I have restarted PowerPoint, but no help, same problem.
Any suggestions?

Change the background color from automatic to a solid background color. The
image probably is the background, not a graphic setting on top of the
background.
