POWERPOINT AND INDEX.HTM Jan 23

FrustratedJohn

I feel embarrassed to come here with such a basic question, but I am the
puppet of frustration.

I have an Applemac (G5, operating system 10.3). I have put together a
presentation in Powerpoint that I am trying to upload for the web. I use
Fetch as my ftp uploader, which has always worked perfectly in the past.

Every time I attempt to open the webpage I see a black page and get the
message 'Open your default.htm file'

Does anybody out there know how I identity which file to make my index.htm?
I have tried just about every combination I can think of, starting with the
obvious .... slide0001.htm

Can you help end my frustration? Thank you for your attention

John

This newsgroup is frequented by people who are mostly PC users. There is a
newsgroup for Mac users.

However, if PowerPoint for Mac generates the same HTML as PowerPoint for PC,
you'll find that a single file plus a folder of files have been created. The
single file should be called something like "presentation name.htm" (Mac's don't
use extensions I guess) and the folder will probably be named "presentation
name". Link to the "presentation name.htm" file.

If that doesn't resolve your problem, post your question at

Thank you Steve and Sonia.

I will follow your joint advice just as oon as I emerge from under an
avalanche of work.

You are both very kind to give up your time to help a poor soul lost in the
high seas of hypertext. That Tim Berners Lee has a lot for which to answer.
Do you agree he is not given enough credit for his role in creating the www?
Or was it Al Gore?

Kindest regards

I now discover, Steve, that you are a Powerpoint Guru. So nice of you to take
time to try to help a stumbling buffoon. Indeed, a Samaritan of the internet.

I take your point (your powerful point) about the web having gone much
farther than T-B-L imagined, but it needed that first step before we could
all follow in his trail.

Al Gore and his Rhythm Kings. Am I right to think it was Dan Quayle on
triangle (or was he playing the potatoe)?

I am a Brit, by the way ... hence my promotion of Tim Berners Lee, who seems
largely unknown among the surfers I come across.

Incidentally, I have still not managed to get my Powerpoint display up and
running as a website. I am about to make a nuisance of myself with Kathy
Jacobs, to see if she can help me soplve the myserty of the index.htm (it was
on her website that I noticed you as being a man who knows what you are
talking about).

Kindest regards

Still-frustrated John

John,
Feel free to make a nuisance of yourself. While I prefer to keep discussions
here on the newsgroup, I know you are going to need to send me files for
this one. The email address is on the site. I'll take a look and let you
know what I find.

Steve, you are far too generous with your time.

I am engaged on other matters at the moment, but I will take your advice at
the first opportunity.

I so want to make it work, because I find Powerpoint such a friendly
environment in which to work (even with my miniscule knowledge compared to
yours).

I hope 2005 is treating you kindly to date.

Sadly I have been defeated, despte all the help and advice from good people
like Sonia, Steve and Kathy.

As I wave the white flag, I turn reluctantly to Dreamweaver (but I would so
much have preferred to present the website in Powerpoint).

Thank you for listening to my ramblings.

Have a wonderful rest of 2005.

(I've emailed to John off list, but thought I should wrap up the thread here
as well...)
I know what is going on.

In the PC versions of PPT there is an option to change the name of the files
from your PPT file's name to something else. When you change it to
"default.htm", you get the information his FTP program expects. If you look
at the options on the Mac versions, you don't have the ability to easily
change the name.

Upshot: I think he is right. He is going to have to learn Dreamweaver or
some equivalent to do the project.

Kathy Jacobs is an Angel of the Web. I award her wings for efforts beyond the
call of duty.

Using Dreamweaver, I have managed to get a holding page up at
www.ontheboxproductions.com but am too tired to do any more. I am now going
to let my head hit the pillow, perchance to dreamweave.

Thanks again to Sonia, Steve and Kathy for all your help. Tim Berners Lee
would be proud of your efforts (he is entitled to be as well known as the
Wright Brothers, John Logie Baird, Edison, Alexander Bell, and Monsuieur
French Fry, who invented the microchip.

Kindest regards

the very top of the screen (to high to be seen at my glance). My bad....
