PowerPoint Crash Loop

We have an application that runs on 2 servers that will call powerpoint to
combine slides and then save a final ppt file. We have an issue where
powerpoint will crash during this process. The problem is that powerpoint
does not write any events to the application event log or any debugging
information. When I remote to the server powerpoint has tried to restart
itself and is prompting to click okay to try again. You try again and then it
offers you safe mode, which also fails. The only way to get powerpoint to
launch again is to reboot the machine. Essentialy its in a loop, i have
checked and there are no stale powerpoint processes in the background. This
is on windows server 2003 with Office 2003 SP1. The problem happens on both
servers so I know its not specific to the machine / build.

My questions are A> Has anybody seen anything like this where powerpoint
simply will not load again until you reboot B> is there anything in office i
can turn on to log more verbosely or kick off dr watson when it crashes
instead of just dying and leaving no log in event viewer until you decline
safe mode.
