Powerpoint format autoshape not working

Powerpoint 97 under WinXP SP2 used to work but suddenly refuses to format an
autoshape, eg a rectangle fill color. Instead it just makes it black and
adds a shadow. I removed and reinstalled all of Office 97 but it makes no
difference. I used to get similar problems with even earlier PP versions
which was eventually found to be due to corruption of a data file in the MS
suite which had to be deleted manually as it was not automatically refreshed
when PP was reinstalled. ie if the filename was present it was not
refreshed even if the file was garbage. Is there is similar prob with this
suite.

I'm not aware of any issue like that.

You might try changing hardware acceleration

monitor display settings.
