Wehn opening a file on a network share PowerPoint can freeze for several
minutes, control is returned and all works well. This can happen each time
files are searched for and appears to be random but once started occures more
regularly

A common cause of this is not being connected to a network drive that used
to be connected. It seems that PPT thinks it can't give you a file list
until it has talked to each of the drives that are supposed to be connected.
If one isn't connected, it waits for the time out to be reported before it
goes on to the next drive.

To check this, open Windows Explorer (or double click My Computer) and see
if there are drives that won't come up when you click on them.

Kathy,

Thanks for the response, this may be part of the problem another user who
has had the problem a little longer, tells me that it happens when attaching
files to an email in outlook and can happen in any office application.
