Powerpoint hyperlinks to .jpg files

I have a Powerpoint presentation with hyperlinks to .jpg files. Although I
can open these files in Windows Explorer using various viewers (by changing
their file association), they will only open in Internet Explorer from the
Powerpoint presentation, regardless of where I set their file association.

I tried this on two different computers, running two different versions of
Powerpoint. Am I doing something that's not valid, or is their a setting
that can be changed so that Powerpoint will allow them to be opened in MY
chosen viewer instead of IE. Any ideas?

1) What version of PowerPoint?

2) How are you launching the presentation (PPT, PPS, EXE, or HTML)?

3) How is the SlideShow set-up (Kiosk, In window, full screen)?

I am running Powerpoint 2000 SP-3 (9.0.8952), launched as PPT, full screen

I did a quick check on three computers here

With PPT 2003 the jpg opened in Photoshop
With 2007 on different boxes it opened in IE7 and IE6

In all cases file association for jpeg is set to PhotoShop

Go figure!!

I suppose you have a good reason for linking to the jpegs??

Hi,

It is interesting that PPT 2003 opened for you in Photoshop. Why some, not
others??

My main reason for linking to the jpgs is that they are images of some US
census sheets which have a lot of detail. I need to be able to zoom in/out
on various parts of the pages. IE gives only two magnification levels, small
and large, with of course, the up/down left/right navigation bars. I can
probably get by, with some apologies to my audience, but I was just curious
if someone knew why Powerpoint ignores the default file associations that
work when the files are accessed from Windows Explorer.

Don't know if this will help but I managed to get it to open in MSPaint by
using this format in Action Settings > Run Program
mspaint.exe "C:\Documents and Settings\John\Desktop\FileA.jpg"

Hi John,

It looks like you and I were doing the same experiments at the same time. I
searched around PowerPoint Help and eventually found the topic below. I
tried it and it appears to work fine. It is basically the same as Hyperlink,
except it explicitly directs PowerPoint to use the program associated with
the target file. With Hyperlink, it appears that PowerPoint follows some
preset program default.

INSTRUCTIONS PER POWERPOINT HELP

Set up a program to open during a slide show
You can open any other program you have — for example, Microsoft Excel or
Microsoft Paintbrush — during a slide show. The program only opens; it isn't
embedded in the presentation.
On the slide, select the text or object you want to use to open the program.
On the Slide Show menu, click Action Settings.
Do one of the following:
To open the program by clicking the selected object during the slide show,
click the Mouse Click tab.
To open the program by moving the mouse pointer over the object, click the
Mouse Over tab.
Click Run program, and then type the path for the program you want to open.
If you don't know the path, click Browse, locate the program, and then click
OK.
Select any other options you want.
For Help on an option, click the question mark and then click the option.
To preview how your program will open during the slide show, click Slide
Show at the lower left of the PowerPoint window.

Another method, although more time consuming, would be to insert the main
picture into a slide (let's call it #7). Then insert enlargements of the
picture on subsequent slides and hide those slides. Then make each of those
slides a custom show. Finally, insert 99% transparent trigger shapes over
the areas of the picture in slide #7 that correspond to the enlargements.
This way you can click on an area of the picture in slide #7 and you will be
shown an enlargement of that area.

The advantage is that the picture will be embedded (not linked) and you
won't need to worry about security set-ups.

hi all
i also same problem but i resolved it by below steps

right click on any .jpg file of your computer
select option open with
now select choose program
from a list select windows picture and fax viewer
and tick on check box at bottom in same dialog box with MSG always use this program for this kind of file
close it

now close your presentation re open it..

and Try link may your problem solved
