PowerPoint linked file folder/path length limitation

We are encountering a problem with linking image files into a PowerPoint
presentation. This seems to relate to a restriction on path lengths and
number of folders within path lengths. We have several linked .bmp files
which are stored on a network share. All of these are less than 128
characters but some still appear broken when we try to update them. Others
are longer (still under 128 characters) but still work. The problem appears
to be down to the number of subfolders in the path. If there are 8 or more
subfolders, the links work sometimes but not others.

Is there a hard limit on the number of subfolders in a linked file, a point
after which it becomes problematic, or is something else likely to be at work
here?

Thanks.

Keith
