PowerPoint Presentation shows wrong when using 'b' for blank

I have a powerpoint which works fine on a std monitor. I modified the size
to suit our [wide-screen] plasma TV and things don't behave correctly when I
come back from having used 'b' (for blank screen).

Expected behaviour:
Press 'b' and the screen goes black.
Press right arrow key or 'w' and the last shown slide re-appears.

What I get on the wdie-screen:
Press 'b' and the screen goes black.
Press right arrow key or 'w' and the resultant display is mostly still
black, with random oblongs of what I expect to see showqing thru - one common
place that often shows is the bottom left corner where the [shape of] the
start button would be found if I wasn't showing a PPT.

I then have to skip forward one more slide, then back to get the slide to
display correctly again.

Other facts to note:
1. If I display the same powerpoint on another computer with a std LCD it
works as expected - ie 'b' brings back the current slide in full.
The PPT displays as expected in a postcard style, with black bands at top &
bottom.

2. I originally had the graphics card set to std resolution size (1024 x
768) on the TV and it worked, but of course the display was stretched; not a
problem for what I was doing with PPT, but was for videos.
I changed the graphics card to wide-screen resolution (not quite 1600 x 900
... sorry exact resolution not noted & that PC turned off for now) and
everything works ok ..EXCEPT.. for PPT displays as described above.

Anyone know what's causing the problem? The graphics card connects to the
TV via DVI.
