Powerpoint slow on large files

C

Charlie

Windows 2000, Powerpoint XP:

opening files is very slow, even selecting them for copy
or move is slow. This is especially bad on network shares.

Windows XP doesn't have this problem.

I've heard this has to do with the preview that ppt
generates in explorer. Can this be disable with some
registry key or other method?

Thanks

I sometimes have problems with this.

One thing that's helped me is deleting my *.PCB file. That's the PPT
toolbar. When that gets too big (mine was, like, 1.5MB or something
outrageous like that!), odd things can start to happen. If you delete
that file, PPT will recreate a new toolbar the next time you open it.
You will lose any customizations you've made to that toolbar, though.

You might also try deleting the *.TMP files from your system, deleting
temporary internet files, and running a defrag.

To get rid of the preview, go to File/Properties and turn off "save
preview pix." Not sure that will make much difference, but it's worth a
shot.

Also, do you have an antivirus program running in the background? If you
disable it, does that help at all?
