Powerpoint switches from accepting jpgs to text only

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) Processor: Power PC I am trying to create a PowerPoint slide show.
When I start up a PowerPoint presentation I have no problem adding jpgs and resizing them and going to the next jpg, etc. After about 40 jpgs my work space will not accept an image. It seems to only want to accept text even tho I don't want any text.
I then see the wording on my workspace has changed. Instead of reading "click to add picture" it changes to "click to add text". I cannot figure a way to get back to adding jpgs. I have not added any text at all to any of the project, just pictures
I have to close and reopen my presentation to continue to add images. Frequent saving seems to aggravate the problem.
Am I making a keystroke I don't know of by accident?

You'll need to supply exact version & update info for both Office & OS X as
well as specs on your Mac. It sounds like you're short on RAM &/or disk
space. It would also be helpful if you'd indicate what file format you're
saving the file in & what the current size of the PPT file is.

What is the file size of the JPEG images & how are you 'adding' them? Keep
in mind that scaling a picture does nothing to change the amount of space
the image file occupies on disk or the amount by which it increases the size
of the PPT file. IOW, you can shrink it down to so small you can't find it
on the slide, but if the JPEG is 1.8MB when inserted it'll still be 1.8MB
after you scale it down.
