powerpoint transitions

How do I have 1 slide crossfade to the next? By this I mean the way two
old-fashioned slide projectors used to "dissolve" between slides, with one
fading out while the next is simultaneously fading up.

None of the options I can find in powerpoint seems to do this.

Thanks much, exactly what I was looking for!

If you are using ppt 2002 or 2003 layer your images instead of putting them
on separate slides. The first image should have Exit animation applied to it
(Fade Out). The second image should have Entrance animation applied to it
(Faded Zoom), it should also be told to start with previous.

You should see a smooth fading transition between the images.
