I have just installed the powerpoint viewer.

What surprised me was the size of the installation file (20MB), yet
the files installed are quite small. Why is the installation file so
large?

It's because of the compatibility pack that's now included as part of the
Viewer so it can open 2007-format PPTX / PPSX files. The PPT 2003 Viewer,
which doesn't have the compat pack appended to it, is only about 2MB.

converts the file to 2003 format

Right. Assuming "this puppy" means the 2003 Viewer, or, more accurately, the
2007 Viewer that ships with PPT 2007 -- which does *not* include the compat
pack. The 2007 Viewer that shipped with PowerPoint 2007 does not open PPTX
files, which is why package for CD converts to the 2003 file format.

- If you use it on your own PC to play PPTX files, it's cool, because all
the
compat stuff is installed. Somewhere or other.

Assuming you're using *PowerPoint 2007* on your PC. Again, the PPT 2007
Viewer that shipped with PPT 2007 doesn't have compat stuff installed and
doesn't open PPTX files. You can, though, install the compat pack
separately, and then it will do so.

purposes, the same as the 2003 Viewer.

Correct. The compat pack won't run from a CD. This is why PPT 2007's Package
for CD backsaves to 2003 format and uses the PPT 2007 Viewer sans compat
pack.
