Go to Help|Check for Updates and make sure you've applied the latest service
pack for Office 2003. It's good that you updated your video drivers, as that
would have been my next suggestion. :)

It might also have to do with color profiles. See Transparent areas of

sigh, didnt work. office is all updated and ready to go. i did some
more testing and the problem sometimes happens also when inserting
pictures into a presentation...
the wierd thing, it all works fine with office xp!
how can that be??? grrr

H

h4nne5

thanks, but didnt solve the problem.
so i tought i go into a bit more detail:
i uploaded a screenshot:
http://img464.imageshack.us/my.php?image=immagine5uy.jpg
some background: i created the presentation at a uni-computer with
office 2003, all working fine, tried to edit at home with office 2003,
didnt work. installed office xp, everthing just fine. worked some more
on it. used the presentation at uni (office 2003 again) no prob. now i
dont want to keep ppt xp AND 2003 on my pc just so some stupid images
show up!
i did a whole lot of searching and tried so far: video drivers, office
updates, reinstalling, installing with all imaginable sort of features,
i also tried to redownload the original image-files and when i try to
insert them they also turn black.
what the hell can that be??
thanks for reading until here

Thanks for posting the screenshot.

I wonder if it's something specific to the Italian version of PPT?

Have you tried using PPT's transparency wand (on the Picture toolbar) to see
if it will remove the black?
i also tried to redownload the original image-files

Where'd the images come from?

I'm still wondering if it's the original photos themselves as described in
PPT FAQ http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00627.htm Did you try the trick
there -- right-click the blackened picture, select Save Picture As, click
the arrow next to the Save button, and choose "save as original." Then open
in Photoshop and remove any color profiles. And double-check to make sure
they're not 48-bit TIFs. :)

ok, this is getting funny!
- when i try the transparency wand this happens:
http://img481.imageshack.us/my.php?image=immagine1rp.jpg
- the original logos can be found here:
http://www.fiatpresse.dk/logos.asp?a=3
- i dont think it's the same issue as discussed at
(http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00627.htm), because a) the images
are jpegs and not png. b) jpgs dont have transparent areas.
- i tried the save as... trick anyways, doesnt help. tried copy/special
paste... no success.

what i'm starting to think.. i remember reading about some locks in
graphics programs (like ps an corel draw) that prevented you from
scanning and modifying dollar notes. could that be something going this
direction? protected company logos???

H

h4nne5

actually, probably not... at uni the stuff worked...
and thats also why i dont think it's an italian version issue cause, as
i said, it worked at uni...

H

h4nne5

oh, and by the way: if i open the saved as... images in photoshop they
are just big black jpegs...

You'r right, JPGs don't have transparency. Sorry -- I didn't recall we were
working with JPG.

When I open these 3 logo images in Photoshop, they look fine. (I went to the
link, clicked "download," let each image open in the new window,
right-clicked and chose Save Picture As and saved. Left the name and file
type alone.) I'm not sure about the lock and dollar notes you're talking
about.

If I open the file properties in Photoshop, I do see photoshop:ColorMode: 3
and photoshop:ICCProfile: sRGB IEc61966-2.1, which leads me back to thinking
it's an issue with the color profile, which is what FAQ 627 discusses. You
need to remove this color profile on the images as described. This is
further supported by the fact that the one logo which does work in your
document does *not* have a color profile assigned in Photoshop. That's why
it's not turning black.

To reiterate, here's a quote from
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00627.htm

you can remove a colour profile from a specific image in Photoshop by
choosing Image, Mode, Assign profile, Don't colour manage this document (or
Edit, Assign profile in Photoshop CS/2).

Doing this should resolve the issue.

Finally! Third time's a charm, I guess. :)

I don't know.
can i do something to make my ppt version work?

Not that I'm aware.
-is there a way to replace the original of an image in a slideshow? so
i wont have to redo all the slides?

No, not unless the image was linked. You'd know if it was linked, so chances
are, it's not.

If the image is on the same place on all (or most) of the slides, put the
image on the slide master. That should save you some work.

">> -why does it work on your and university ppt without first removing the
Oh, you know, it might have to do with what all was installed when Photoshop
was installed on the various computers. Maybe if you don't have the color
profile the image uses, the image shows up black.

Sounds reasonable to me, but I've no idea if it really works that way or
not, sorry.
