When using powerpoint 2003 from windows 2003Xp to print,
the program slows and ultimately will not respond when
printing.

I think you may mean PowerPoint 2002 (aka PowerPoint XP) and Windows XP.

Under Tools > Options > Printing, make certain you check "print in
background".
