Powerpoint's amnesia regarding font size

S

Stephan Rudolfer

In creating a slide using Powerpoint 2003, I have a list of bullet points. I
am using 24 point font, and the list hangs down over the bottom of the slide.
I was under the impression that Powerpoint automatically re-sizes the font
to fit the placeholder.

However, when I reduce the font size to make the bullet list fit the slide,
on exiting from Powerpoint and re-entering it, it has forgotten the new
formatting completely, and just repeats the wrong formatting when opened up
again.

Could somebody please tell me what I am doing wrong (if anything), and
suggest a solution to this most irritating problem? Many thanks in advance.

There's a bug in the multiple masters that can cause this to happen.
See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;827759

Regarding the autosize, go to Tools/Autocorrect and select "autofit body
text to placeholder."

We get the same problem but there are no multiple masters in the
presentation. It happens on one person's laptop in particular, but not on
mine, yet we are using exactly the same presentation.

Is the same problem caused by passing a presentation between laptops that
are using different versions of PowerPoint?

Honestly, I'm not sure what causes the problem. Out of curiosity, though,
which versions of PPT are the two of you using?

Another workaround is to format the placeholder the way you want it and then
copy it and paste it onto the slide. (Or hold down Ctrl+Shift and drag the
edge of the placeholder to create a duplicate and contstrain it to the same
horizontal/vertical position. This usually makes it easier to reposition.)
Delete the original. This new textbox is no longer a placeholder. That can
be both good and bad, but it will at least resolve the resizing issue. :)
