PowerPoiunt Error: "PowerPoint can't read c:\<filename>.ppt

I get this error opening some ppt files. Mostly ones people send me. I am running Windows XP Prof. Office Prof Edition 2003.
Is there an upgrade I am missing? Or is a configuraiton need to be changed on my machine? Please advise.

There is a critical fix for Office 2003. Open PowerPoint, go to Help and
click on Check for Updates. Follow the links to "Check for Update" and
install it.
