I'm trying to not only set the background, but also the font type, size, and
color within a slide. Can I do this or can I only set the background?

Mike,
Is this for all slides in the presentation? All of those things can be
applied in the master of the presentation. Go to View - Master - Slide
master. You can select any placeholder and format it to your wishes. If you
want to change the colors go to the slide design color scheme taskpane,
choose your color scheme or edit it using the link at the bottom of the
pane.

Go to View > Master > Slide Master to adjust your settings.
To set color use Format > Slide Design. In the Slide Design Task Pane (at
right), Choose Color Schemes. To edit color schemes, select Edit Color Scheme
(located at bottom of Task Pane). I suggest that you delete all other color
schemes, keeping only your custom colors.
